Since 1986,
East West Tae Kwon Do has been providing instruction in Tae Kwon Do and the martial arts in
Potomac, Maryland. We develop the mind, body and spirit of the student by making learning fun. Classes are structured, disciplined, positive and safe. When you begin training at East West, there are never contracts or registration fees. You are invited for a free introductory lesson.

Through our unique training methods, we help adults and children achieve new levels of physical fitness and mental strength. Master Parshotam Sharma, owner and instructor, has over twenty years of teaching experience. He has the patience, skill, and dedication to bring out the best in every student.
For those especially interested in competition, East West participates in numerous state and national tournaments. Training focuses on the physical and mental preparation of the student, with an emphasis on individual as well as team performance and good sportsmanship. East West is affiliated with USA Taekwondo, the governing body for Olympic Tae Kwon Do in the United States. East West produces state and national champions!
Tae Kwon Do is a fantastic activity for the entire family. Adults enjoy improved physical fitness, flexibility, and strength while reducing stress. Children work toward goals, build self-esteem and character, and learn self-discipline and self-defense. But most of all, it's fun!
What is Tae Kwon Do?
Tae Kwon Do is characterized by fast, high and spinning kicks. There are multiple interpretations of the name Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do is often translated as 'the way of hand and foot.'
Tae = 'Foot' or 'to kick' or 'to jump' K'won = 'Fist' or 'to strike or block with hand' Do = 'The way of' or 'art' |
Put this together and Tae Kwon Do means: "The art of kicking and punching."
Disciplines of Tae Kwon Do
Tae Kwon Do has four disciplines:
- Forms
- Sparring
- Self-defense
- Board Breaking
It is the combination of these four disciplines that make the art of Tae Kwon Do.
Objectives of Tae Kwon Do:
- to develop an appreciation for Tae Kwon Do as a sport and an art
- to achieve physical fitness through positive participation
- to improve mental discipline
- to learn self-defense skills
- to develop a sense of responsibility for oneself and others
